Civic pride knew no bounds when the United States Courthouse and Post Office Building, begun in 1883, opened in 1887. The first federal building in Columbus, it was a tangible symbol of the city's growing influence. Its grand, arched openings and masonry walls earned it the designation as Romanesque Revival in style.
