On December 28, 2000 the U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services issued final regulations to implement the privacy requirements of the
Administrative Simplification subtitle of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. The regulations
became effective on April 14, 2001 and the compliance date for covered entities is
April 14, 2003. The HIPAA security
regulations, published February 20, 2003, carry a compliance date of April 21, 2005. Use the links on the
