Recruiting: Why Choose Bricker & Eckler?

Lee Heckman
The Ohio State University Law School class of 2008; member of the 2007 clerk class

Interviewing with a law firm is a process where both you and the firm want to be viewed in the best possible light. For some, this means assuming an identity that is thought to be appealing to the other person. I’ve never been comfortable with that approach, and I found I wasn’t comfortable with law firms that took that approach, either. From the very first on-campus interview to my last day as a summer clerk, I have felt totally at ease with myself and others at Bricker & Eckler.

The people at Bricker are affable and genuine. Not only was I impressed with the many I met during recruiting, but I can now say that they were a true reflection of the people throughout the firm. And while there are plenty of law firms with exciting legal work, few can truly boast the friendly, collective atmosphere at Bricker. It’s exactly the kind of place where I want to work.

The projects I worked on this summer were interesting, varied, and meaningful. Because the assignments passed through a coordinating attorney, the work load was steady—neither unmanageable, nor boring. Starting the very first week clerks were asked to provide assistance on significant projects for the firm. Throughout the summer I was asked for my opinion and received insightful feedback on the projects I had completed. Furthermore, all clerks had “Out of Office Opportunities,” and I found myself tagging along to court to watch Bricker attorneys in oral argument twice, and attending two other status conferences. Because the work clerks are asked to do is both meaningful and beneficial to the firm, it is easy to feel like a valued member of the team.

It has also been enjoyable to get to know everyone at Bricker outside of the office. With planned and impromptu social events, golf, kickball, and Corporate Challenge athletic endeavors, there have been plenty of opportunities to meet more people and get to know others better. From the start, I had a good feeling about Bricker. At the conclusion of my summer, I can honestly say that all of my high expectations were met or exceeded. Bricker is a great place to work, and you should strongly consider it.
