I hesitate in writing this, because I know, despite what I say, I will not be able to do justice to Bricker & Eckler LLP. The firm holds an integrity and a “culture” that is both unique and superior to that of other firms. How do I know this? Clerks talk. Throughout the summer, my experience has been personally inspiring and professionally enriching. From day one, the clerk committee has established that our growth and learning takes precedent. The attorneys at Bricker & Eckler have taken hearty steps to ensure that summer associates are included in all activities –from involvement in the firm’s soccer games to a super hero themed summer party. Mingling with associates and partners, getting to know spouses and significant others, the clerk class has become an integral part of the firm.
Aside from social events, summer associates are given both peer and firm mentors to be designated guides throughout the summer. These mentors become our advocates, and their offices become the chambers for conversations regarding how to handle work, what to wear to firm events, and various other life issues. We are taken on “out of office opportunities”, given substantial assignments, and introduced to client relations. When friends of mine, clerking at other firms that shall not be named, complain about piles of assignments, the harshness of their work environment, or the partner that must constantly be revered, I hide a tiny but quite smug smile. That is not Bricker & Eckler.
Prior to this summer, I envisioned law firms as sterile, callous, void of laughter, color, and any appealing aspect of life. Although I have always wanted to work in a firm, the rumors of firm life were unforgiving. I braced myself for endless hours of work, backbiting associates, and coldhearted partners. Once I stepped into Bricker & Eckler, I was in for a surprise. The firm is located in the heart of the downtown, in a renovated historical stone building. My first impression of Bricker & Eckler was that the building itself exuded the aura of the firm –warmth, exuberance, and brilliance.
This summer has come and gone, and my first impression of the firm still stands. I have met wonderful personalities at Bricker & Eckler and have gained great respect for the firm. The contribution that this firm makes to the legal community is quite substantial –but what makes Bricker & Eckler stand apart from other large law firms are the people working inside this historic building. These people carry an integrity, a commitment, and a devotion that is contagious. There is no better place to clerk and no better place to work than at Bricker & Eckler LLP.
