Consistent with our rich tradition and commitment to diversity and inclusion, Bricker & Eckler LLP annually awards the Charles H. Walker Minority Scholarship. Established to provide first-year minority law students with a valuable employment experience early in their legal career, this scholarship is awarded to a minority candidate (as defined in the Equal Employment Opportunity Commissions Regulations, 29 C.F.R. Part 1602, i.e. Native American or Alaska native, Asian or Pacific Islander, African-American or Black and Hispanic) who demonstrates leadership skills, academic strength, service to the community and an overall commitment to excellence.
Diversity and inclusion are not only driving forces for our firm’s future, but are an important part of our history. Bricker & Eckler was the first Columbus, Ohio majority law firm to hire an African-American attorney, as well as the first to elect an African American, Charles Walker, to the partnership. We proudly dedicate this scholarship in honor of our partner and trusted friend, Charles H. Walker, whose career and service to our community exemplify a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Minority students in their first year of legal studies currently enrolled in an ABA-approved law school are eligible to apply for the scholarship. One scholarship in the form of a $10,000 cash award (less any applicable taxes and withholdings) towards law school tuition and other law school related expenses is awarded each year. In addition, the scholarship recipient receives a paid summer associate position the year their scholarship is awarded.
