Consistent with our rich tradition, commitment to diversity and inclusion and in tribute to Charlie’s tireless work on behalf of the community, Bricker & Eckler LLP is pleased to present the Charles H. Walker Diversity & Inclusion Scholarship for 2018.

Established to provide a first-year law student with a valuable employment experience early in his or her legal career, this scholarship will be awarded to a candidate who: demonstrates leadership skills, academic strength, service to the community, an overall commitment to excellence and who has exhibited a meaningful commitment to diversity and inclusion.

We proudly dedicate this scholarship in memory of our partner and trusted friend Charles H. Walker, whose career and service to our community exemplified a strong commitment to both the legal profession and Bricker’s tradition of diversity and inclusion. Throughout his career, he served as a recruiter and mentor to our younger attorneys and helped guide Bricker & Eckler’s diversity and inclusion commitment.

Students who will be 1L students in an ABA-approved law school by January 2018 are eligible to apply for the scholarship. One scholarship in the form of a $10,000 cash award (less any applicable taxes and withholdings) towards law school tuition and other law school related expenses will be awarded. In addition, the scholarship recipient will receive a paid summer associate position for the summer of 2018.

Eligible candidates should forward their résumé with GPA to the attention of Patricia M. Lach, Director of Professional Development, Bricker & Eckler LLP, 100 South Third Street, Columbus, OH 43215. All résumés must be submitted /received by February 1, 2018. Scholarship finalists will be interviewed by members of the Firm’s Recruiting Committee and we hope to make the final selection by April 1, 2018.

Bricker & Eckler is currently searching for a legal assistant with strong secretarial and administrative talents and at least five years of prior legal experience, including strong skills to support our labor and employment law practice. Skills should include but not be limited to litigation, discrimination and harassment, personnel issues, policy implementation, and workers’ compensation matters. Candidate should also have experience with litigation software and an aptitude for training on new systems; excellent written/oral communication skills; strong attention to detail; excellent editing skills, including proofreading and cite-checking; and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Windows 7/Word 2010) and discovery software such as Relativity. Part-time Legal Assistant/Secretary – Job Share (afternoons) and evening support
Bricker is currently searching for a legal assistant/secretary to join our team in a job-sharing arrangement and as evening legal support, working approximately 29 hours per week from 2:00 to 8:30 pm, Monday through Thursday and 2:00 to 5:00 pm on Friday. We are specifically seeking someone with strong secretarial and administrative talents with at least five years of prior legal experience, including strong skills to support our financial services/litigation attorneys including complex commercial financial litigation at the trial and appellate level, class action defense and bankruptcy, bankruptcy litigation and reorganization. The following skills are essential: outstanding typing, spelling, proofreading, and grammatical skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Windows 7/Word 2010); strong attention to detail; self-starter; ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment; and enthusiasm for working as part of a team.   

Marketing & Public Relations Intern
Bricker & Eckler is currently searching for a Marketing & Public Relations Intern to join our fast-paced Practice Development Department in the Columbus office to help enhance the firm’s reputation and drive business for the firm. Candidate must be a current junior or senior who is studying communications, marketing, public relations or journalism with at least one prior internship. English majors with a strong writing background will also be considered.Candidate must possess strong organizational skills, written and oral communication skills and project management skills. Candidate must be able to work independently with little direction and be able to work as part of a dynamic team of marketing and business development professionals. Being comfortable interacting with senior level executives is a plus. Candidates should be familiar with Microsoft Office applications including Excel and PowerPoint. Working knowledge of graphic design programs and HTML is a plus. The internship pays $15/hour with a schedule of no more than 15 hours per week. The duration of Bricker & Eckler’s internship is anticipated to extend to no less than six months, but the firm encourages interns to be available for up to a year-long affiliation to maximize the experience for both the student and the firm.  Duties will get more challenging as the internship progresses. Here are some examples of work included in our internship program: proofreading and editing of materials, updating attorney biographies, creating marketing and promotional packets for client meetings and seminars, assisting with event management, assisting in the development and compilation of proposals and RFPs, developing and analyzing monthly media and website reports, assisting with the creation of blog entries and posting blogs, drafting headlines and teaser text for electronic communications (including website), developing PowerPoint presentations and writing press releases and social media messages.
