Cleveland named host city for 2016 Republican National Convention

Today, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus announced that Cleveland was unanimously selected by the committee to host the 2016 Republican National Convention, the first time Ohio will host the convention since 1936. reports that “the expected June availability of Quicken Loans Arena, which will host floor events for the convention,” is believed to have played a role in the city’s selection for the convention planned for late June to mid-July 2016. Priebus said Cleveland “has gone above and beyond the call of duty and I think they’re representative of a city eager to show the country all the fantastic things they have to offer,” according to The Columbus Dispatch.

Ohio Governor John Kasich echoed that sentiment, saying, “We’re going to be able to tell . . . the rest of the country about Ohio. It’s going to allow us to focus on all the other great things going on around the state … and how we’re rebuilding from sort of an old industrial state . . . into something that is transforming itself.”
