Bricker & Eckler welcomes all-female class of first-year attorneys
This fall, the law firm of Bricker & Eckler LLP welcomes six recent law school graduates to the practice: Brittney Herman (taxation), Zeynep Kart (construction), Caitlin Langfitt (public finance), Karin Long (health care), Kasey Nielsen (higher education) and Jordan Rowland (real estate). These individuals, all women attorneys, are highly talented and have already made significant accomplishments in their fields and their communities. The candidates have excelled in a competitive pursuit to work within one of the region’s top law firms. Upon their admittance to the Ohio bar, these new attorneys will begin collaborating with their industry and practice group teams, helping clients navigate their legal challenges.
Brittney Herman is a tax attorney who provides counsel on all aspects of state and federal taxation. She advises organizations with a variety of tax structures and within several industries, ensuring that exemptions, operational structures and transactions follow all tax regulations and guidelines. She is a former Bricker summer associate, and while in law school, Brittney served as a faculty research fellow and was also a law clerk within the IRS Office of Chief Counsel, where she reviewed and prepared tax documents and met with taxpayers to conduct informal discovery and reach settlements. Brittney is the founder and president of We Will, a nonprofit organization that aims to prevent sexual assault and empower survivors through formal and informal education, community growth and survivor support.
Zeynep Kart is a construction attorney who provides legal services to both public and private owners on all regulatory aspects of construction projects. She works with her clients to ensure compliance with all applicable statutes and administrative rules, frequently preparing documents needed for construction and bidding. A member of Bricker’s 2019 summer associate class, Zeynep was selected as the firm’s Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) Scholar for the national LCLD program. She has additional experienced with the Human Service Chamber of Franklin County, the Legal Aid Society of Columbus, the Immigration Bond Project, the Law and Leadership Institute, City Year Columbus and Southeast Ohio Legal Services. Zeynep is fluent in Turkish and proficient in Spanish.
Caitlin Langfitt is a public finance attorney who helps her clients manage and take advantage of innovative financing options, including tax increment financing (TIF), community reinvestment area (CRA) abatements, joint economic development districts (JEDDs) and special assessment financing. She is also highly involved in property assessed clean energy (PACE) financing transactions. Caitlin previously served as a Bricker summer associate, a legal research assistant, as well as a legal intern with the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office. Prior to law school, she held several management and leadership positions with technology companies, including Microsoft. She also has experience dealing with highly sensitive data and information through a project management role she held with Lockheed Martin, which involved collaboration with the United States Mint and the United States Department of Defense.
Karin Long is a health care attorney whose practice focuses on medical malpractice. With specific experience in wrongful death, personal injury and birth injury matters, she has been involved in high-profile cases, drafting and responding to motions, reviewing and abstracting documents, analyzing medical records, and conducting depositions of physicians and medical staff. Additionally, Karin has been involved in employment matters, including COVID-19 policies, defenses for employment suits pertaining to agency and civil procedure issues in asbestos suits. While in law school, Karin was involved in a report highlighting the most pressing legal risks for a top-ten global auto manufacturer. She also wrote a response to a motion for summary judgment that was filed in federal court in an electrocution case claiming over $1 million.
Kasey Nielsen is a higher education attorney with specific experience in university policies and bylaws related to collegiate athletics. As a trained Title IX investigator and decision-maker, Kasey assists colleges and universities in drafting and reviewing institutional policies to comply with federal regulations. With experience in the legal departments of the NCAA and several conferences, Kasey has worked with athletic departments on compliance matters involving amateurism, recruiting, eligibility, and playing and practice seasons. Recently, Kasey provided guidance on various legal issues associate with COVID-19, including communication plans, re-opening campus plans, acknowledgment and liability waivers, international students and remote learning options. She has been a fellow with Bricker’s education group since 2019 and is also a former legal extern with the United State District Court, Middle District of Louisiana.
Jordan Rowland is a real estate attorney who helps corporate clients manage both routine and complex property transactions. From drafting documents to negotiating the terms of purchases and sales, she ensures that all legal and regulatory guidelines are considered and performs thorough due diligence to protect the interests of her clients. A former summer associate with Bricker, Jordan was also previously a judicial extern for Justice Michael Donnelly of the Supreme Court of Ohio. Additionally, she has law clerk and internship experience working with OCLC, Inc., Franklin County Public Defender, the Ohio Department of Public Safety and the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.
