Nelson Carney explains COVID healthcare regulation changes on Leading with Health podcast
Leading with Health podcast host Jennifer Michelle, of Michelle Marketing Strategies, interviewed Jennifer Nelson Carney, partner and chair of Bricker’s Health Care industry group, about federal and state healthcare regulation changes in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hospitals have to comply with a huge regulatory framework under normal circumstances, but the pandemic made regulatory compliance extremely challenging. Nelson Carney explained federal and state changes that allowed for a nimble response to COVID-19, notably that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the source of much healthcare regulation, issued waivers that left regulation on the books while allowing providers to forgo compliance during the public health emergency. Nelson Carney outlined how states also grappled with their own health care regulations, and the need to have a plan in place for transitioning to compliance again when the waivers are rolled back.
