U.S. Supreme Court delays start of early voting in Ohio

The U.S. Supreme Court overturned an order issued by U.S. District Court Judge Peter C. Economus that would have opened the polls in Ohio for early voting on Tuesday, September 30, despite a state law passed by the Ohio legislature that delays early voting. The U.S. Supreme Court agreed with arguments made by Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine and Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted that Economus’ decision put a strain on election officials administering the 2014 election. As a result of the 5-4 ruling, early voting will begin on October 7, thus voiding the so-called “golden week,” during which voters may register and vote at the same time.
