Strange bedfellows? Insurance and political protests clash in the era of COVID

When Canadian truckers blocked key trade routes to the U.S. over government-mandated health orders, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Parliament invoked the Emergency Economic Measurers Order, Canada’s first national public order emergency in half a century, to break up the blockade. One component of the government’s actions included a restriction on financial services to the truckers, including suspension of property & casualty insurance, as Timothy Darragh reports in A.M. Best (subscription needed to access). While most insurance policies have exclusions for damage that occurs while committing an illegal act, it is rare that a government proactively requests carriers to suspend coverage because a policy holder is engaged in illegal activity.
