Governor Beshear declared a State of Emergency on December 9, 2021, addressing the nursing shortage across the Commonwealth, which the Governor said at his weekly news conference is “operating 12 to 20 percent short of needed nursing volume.” The emergency order, among other things, directs the Kentucky Board of Nursing (i) to allow registered nurses from other states to practice in Kentucky, (ii) to increase enrollment for any nursing program that can demonstrate it has the sufficient resources to do so under the applicable standard, and (iii) requires nursing programs to report vacancies monthly to the Kentucky Board of Nursing so it can be posted on the board’s website for prospective students. The Executive Order can be found here and the news conference discussing the order can be found here.
