On August 10, 2021, Governor Andy Beshear announced that in response to the COVID-19 Delta variant and recent U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance, all vaccinated and unvaccinated teachers, staff, students and visitors must wear face coverings when indoors in all public and private schools (preschool through grade 12) in Kentucky, including school transportation vehicles. Staff, visitors, and children over 2 years old must also wear face coverings in indoor child care settings, regardless of vaccination status. The sharp surge in COVID cases, and particularly the surge of hospitalizations of children with COVID-19, is causing hospitals and children’s hospitals to become overwhelmed. Kentucky has seen a 43% increase in hospitalized COVID cases in the past week.
